It’s been a looooooong week.  We lost a dear family member to cancer a few days ago and have been focused on family and remembrance.  I stumbled upon this poem, coincidentally, in a book that I’ve been reading about coincidence (fantastic book, by the way), and it helped shed a brighter light on this loss.  The eulogy given by Uncle Neil’s son Mark, though, knocked me back down...

Sappy thank you post: :::Thank you, Emmet’s mom and dad, for making what is the sweetest, weirdest, most adorable little man a dog-mom could ask for.::: :::Thank you, Home Depot, for considering pots of daffodils and hyacinth that have yet to bloom to be “clearance items”, and therefore allowing me to rescue a bunch from their certain death in a crowded box shoved on the...

Happy first day of spring everyone!   It’s a gorgeous day here in the northeast and I hope it’s just as nice wherever you are.

:::photo courtesy of White Flower Farm::: Oh, folks, we broke out the ice cream machine (which, by the way, Ben aptly named Boris) over the weekend and made a double batch of ultimate chocolate ice cream with brownie chunks strewn throughout.  We followed a new recipe using a homemade caramel base with a chocolate ganache blended in, and baked the brownies half way to keep them ooey-gooey (the...

Somehow I managed to scrape up enough good karma throughout this life of mine and it won me the absolute best husband in the world.  This man bought me a new ice cream maker!!!  We’re playing with the big boys now, kids!  This thing is so heavy the UPS dude actually asked me what was in the box.  It’s amazing.  No more waiting 24 hours to freeze the bowl before making a second batch,...

Temps have been ranging between the high fifties and the low seventies over the last week or so, so the dogs and I have been taking every single opportunity to get outside, enjoy the weather and clean up the yard.  Well, I do the cleaning, while they run around like maniacs and smile a whole lot.  I adore Ollie’s smile. photo by Mike

In my efforts to cut back on the amount of waste coming out of this house, I’m taking small steps to change the way we do things around here.  Step one is to remove as much of the paper waste as I possibly can.  This is going to be a tricky one, but I started off by making us some reusable cloth napkins.  I can’t think of an easier project for anyone to try and the result is...

The Troy Arts Center hosts Family Sundays (only five bucks!) for kids every couple of weeks and I treated my favorite girl to a class yesterday.  Lola is all about fairies these days and when I noticed that the theme for this week was fairy houses, I signed us up months in advance. The instructor started off the class showing pictures of fairy houses to use as inspiration for the houses to be...

I’ve been sewing like a madwoman lately, making things not only for sale locally, but for my house as well (more on that another time).  I’ve been doing quite a bit of business with Dawn at the Botanic Studio in downtown Troy, NY for the last year or so and every experience with her is a pleasure.  Her shop is my absolute favorite of all the local shops, and just being in there to...

A rather amusing interview with Mr. Eric Bachmann for those of you who give a damn: Eric Bachmann of Archers Of Loaf discusses and performs “Web In Front”

I was sitting in the living room with Ben yesterday when I noticed a ton of movement going on outside my window.  I turned around and saw that there were dozens of birds flying in from all directions and landing in the tree across the street from our house.  Seriously, when I say dozens, I mean dozens of birds.  And you know what?  They were robins!  We must have caught them in some weird...

We’ve officially reached the end of the life of the pee flowers.  I doubt I’d grow these paperwhites again just based on the smell alone, but they sure were pretty while they lasted.

I’ve been feeling like poo lately, as some weird stomach thing came in and just took over my body.  I had tickets to see Jane’s Addiction last night and of course I missed that.  Wonderful.  I did have a good laugh, though, which was something I definitely needed to bring a little light into a nasty day.  Mike sent me a link to this clip and I think I’ve watched it a hundred...

I learned a few things over the last couple of days… * Though I thought I disliked walnuts, or, rather, I wasn’t very fond of walnuts, I learned that if you candy them in maple syrup, sugar, vanilla, butter and cinnamon, they’re damn good.  Add them generously into a batch of maple ice cream and they truly rock. * I learned that I really, really love making...

We celebrated the 5th birthday of one of my most favoritest boys in the world today, my cousin’s son, Ryan.  This little man had such an awful time coming into this world and the complications during his birth could easily have taken his life.  He’s a tough kid, though, and he pulled through.  I don’t think there’s a single soul out there who knows him who isn’t...
