I know we’re not supposed to wish our days away, and lately I’m trying to be mindful of that. But I’m just so excited for tomorrow to hurry up and get here already! So many things to do:

* First up, the local library’s Bake, Bloom and Book sale featuring, you guessed it, baked goods, used books, and all sorts of plants. All money goes back to the library. I never miss this.

* A trip to the farmers’ market to get our weekly veggies (hey Troy, what happened to the Wednesday market???), some cream from our favorite dairy farm, and hopefully an organic sage plant. Sage is the only thing that failed this year in my first attempt at seed starting. I’m still holding out hope for the eggplant, but they just don’t look happy either. We shall see…

* Home to actually PLANT my veggies in the ground. After begging Mother Nature to give us warmer nights, my wish was granted, and we’re going right up into the high 50s and low 60s after tonight. Hooray!!!

* Homemade ice cream (with the previously purchased cream from our very favorite dairy farm). Enough said.

* Celebrate because we’re going to win one of the biggest lotteries in history! 550 million! How’s that for positive thinking?

I think if I have to make the twice-a-day trip of bringing the seedlings out, and then in, one more time, I might lose my mind. They’ve been hardening off for almost a month now.

Please, Mother Nature, please give me some nighttime temps in the 50s so I can plant these things already!!!

Here’s a little “then and now” post about our biggest lilac in the yard.

Years ago, back when I was working the dreaded desk job (that shall not be mentioned again), my cubicle mate offered me a tiny lilac offshoot that her daughter had given her. Her daughter’s tree was massive and loaded with babies, so she started taking the suckers from the mother plant and moving them to different places in her yard.

This particular offshoot was given to my cube-mate two years prior in a bucket with a teeny bit of soil and a whole lot of tiger lilies threatening to squeeze the life out of it. She just never got around to planting it. It somehow managed to survive an entire winter that way, so I knew it must be hardy, and therefore I adopted it. We had just purchased our home and weren’t even in the beginning stages of thinking about what to plant.

When I brought home an old, cracked paint bucket with some dirt and a stick in it and announced to Ben that we absolutely were going to plant this thing, he thought I was nuts, but he obliged. As we started digging the hole, we realized how horrendous our soil was (it’s all backfill, bricks and glass included), and were completely sure this little stick would die. One year later, it was still alive and just barely covered in leaves. I don’t remember it progressing this fast, but according to the photo above, it apparently even flowered.

Flash forward seven years and this thing is not only well over 8 feet tall, but COVERED in blooms and shooting off sucker babies of its own. I love this thing dearly. Ben loves it too. In fact, we love it so much that we’ve since planted over a dozen new “sticks” in various places all over the yard and we don’t even think twice about them perishing in our crappy soil. They’re all doing well.
